The National Institute of Design (NID) isthe best institute in the field of design, training and research. NID was founded as an autonomous institute in the year 1961. It is India’s first premier design institute having three campuses, i.e. Ahmadabad, Bangalore and Gandhinagar.

Courses Offered By NID 

For those who wish to make a bright careerin design, undoubtedly, NID is on their list of priorities. But is it that easy to take admission in NID courses? There are several courses and subjects for which you can fill out NID application forms. 

NID Undergraduate Programmes (After 12th) NID four yearsundergraduate courses are offered only at Ahmadabad Campus, where students can apply for various programmes like: 

  • Communication Design: This is a program where you can learn about Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, and Film and Video Communication. The total number of seats is 64. 
  • Industrial Design: The field is dedicated to Ceramic and Glass Designing, Furniture and Interior Design and Product Design. The total number of seats for this NID course is 45. 
  • Textile and Apparel Design: This field of designing relates to textile designing. The number of available seats to apply is 19. 

Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD)

This 4-year diploma graduate program isoffered on the campus of NID Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Assam. Students can do specialisation in this program in the following fields: 

  • Communication Designing: You can learn about animation film and graphic design under this. The number of available seats for this design course is 25. 
  • Industrial Design: This course offers specialisation in consumer electronics, furniture design, ceramic and kitchenware design, product design, car design and bio-design. The number of seats to get enrolled in this program is 25. 
  • Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design: This field is dedicated to textile design, where 19 seats are available for admission. 

Master of Design (M.Des) 

NID Master of Design offers a postgraduateprogram for two and half years at Ahmadabad Campus. It offers specialisation in the following subjects:

Admission Process and Eligibility Criteriain NID 

NID conducts national level entrance examsin two phases Prelims and Mains. The marks scored by students and their performance decide the admission process at NID. 

Admission and Exam Process for B.Des andGDPD 

Students must appear in the first phase ofthe B.Des and GDPD exam known as the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) to get admission to this NID course. It is a 3 hours entrance exam of 100marks. The language mode of the question paper is in English only. The students who will hit the cut-off marks for DAT Prelims are eligible to sit in DAT mains. Prelims shortlisted students can sit in the mains exam, which will be 100 marks. Students are requested to download their exam admit card from the NID official website. The revised marks weightage for prelims is 70%, and for mains, 30%, which is based on online interaction. Students must have passed the 12th or 10+2 exam in any stream from a recognised institute. 

Admission Procedure for NID M.Des Program 

The admission criteria in NID M.Des programare quite similar to the B.Des Program. The exam name is Design Aptitude Test (DAT) is also conducted in two stages, i.e. Prelims and Mains. The entrance exam name is CDAT which means Common Design Aptitude Test. The test papers are prepared in a mixed manner which combines both subjective and objective questions. It is 100 marks exam conducted in the English language. If the candidate is applying in one discipline, the exam duration will be two and half hours, whereas the exam duration will be four and half hours if applying for two disciplines. Only prelims shortlisted candidates are eligible for the mains paper.  

DAT main exam mode will be online accordingto the revised examination rules. Prelims exam weightage is 60% whereas mains exam weightage is 40%.  

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degreefor a minimum of 3 years. Passing marks is mandatory in all the subjects. Besides, candidates should have 4 years of undergraduate diploma degree in design/arts and architecture. 

Admission Procedure for P.HD NID Programs 

Students who wish to enrol in the NID P.HDprogram have to appear in the exam in three different phases. In the first stage, the application form of candidates will be shortlisted based on the following criteria: 

Stage 1 

  • Candidates' eligibility criteria will be verified. 
  • The research paper of applicants will be examined based on the National Institutes of Design Research. 
  • It will be comprised of a total of 100 marks. 

Stage 2 

  • Design Research Test will be conducted only at Ahmadabad Campus. 
  • Through DRT, the design research aptitude test of the candidate will be tested or examined. 
  • Situation /test and fieldwork of 50 marks will be tested. 
  • General Awareness and Design Ability test comprises 50 marks. 
  • Students will be judged based on skills like imagination and observation, creativity and design thinking, data representation etc. 

Stage 3 

The final stage is the interview round orsession for which a candidate must be prepared with: 

  • Presentation skill  
  • The topic of research and proposal 
  • Need to fulfil NID research priorities
